The Early Show on CBS Featuring Just Between Friends and SeekingSitters

Two local businesses are getting national attention later this month on The Early Show on CBS. Adrienne Kallweit, Co-Founder and President of SeekingSitters Franchise Systems, Inc. and Shannon Wilburn, Co-Founder and President of Just Between Friends Franchise Systems, Inc. will be featured guests on special segment entitled, “New Year, New Career”.  The series will focus on ideas to recharge your career in the New Year and this segment will provide information on starting a small business.

The Early Show Weekend Anchor and Business & Economics Correspondent Rebecca Jarvis will lead the “Roundtable Discussion” where Kallweit and Wilburn will share advice for starting and building a business, what to do and what not to do to be successful. The live segment is scheduled to air Tuesday, Dec. 27 on KOTV channel 6

“We are honored to have the opportunity to share our knowledge and experience as business owners to people across the country.  I hope we can inspire others to follow their dream and start a new venture in 2012,” said Kallweit

“We have both learned a great deal over the years on how to successfully run and grow a national company – including what NOT to do.  It is exciting to be able to share our experiences with the rest of the country,” added Wilburn.

Both SeekingSitters and Just Between Friends were also just named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top 500 Franchises for 2012. Just Between Friends is number 240 and SeekingSitters is number 324 on the list.  The magazine judges businesses by the following criteria:  financial strength and stability, growth rate, size of the franchise, number of years in business, number of years franchising and start-up costs.

JBF Featured Franchisee: Stacey Losher

Susan Newhouse and Stacey Losher

Our Just Between Friends featured franchisee this week is Stacey Losher. Stacey is one of the Event Coordinators for JBF Dallas. Stacey is a mother of 4 and works full time as a Children’s Minister.

With Social Media playing an important part in how we connect and communicate, in what way do you use Faceook, Twitter, LinkedIn to promote your business?

Facebook is probably our best form of social media; we do our best to post useful non-JBF related status updates throughout the year. Giving our FB Friends opportunities to save money with a coupon or a fun kid activity or recipe keeps them interested in us without us pushing only JBF all year long!!

How do you balance family and friends with being a successful business owner?

It’s getting easier the older my kids get! I’ve owned the sale for 8 years and the Spring 2011 sale was my first sale where all 4 of my kids were in school full time, that was awesome!!! However, I’ve done it pregnant with babies so I know it can be done! The blessings the sale have brought to my family far outweigh the struggles of balancing it all.

Where do you hold your JBF events?

Mesquite Rodeo Exhibit Hall

When did you consider yourself a success as a JBF Franchisee?

Immediately! Being a part of JBF is like a family, everyone’s success is recognized, we share in each other’s accomplishments and work through struggles together.

How did you get started with JBF?

My partner, Susan Newhouse is Shannon Wilburn’s sister in law!!

How long have you owned your franchise?

8 awesome years!

What is your favorite part of the business?

Hearing the stories of the shoppers and consignors and how much money they saved or made!!

What advice would you give someone considering a JBF Franchise?

Pray about it! It’s a commitment that will re-define who you are! I cannot imagine my life without JBF. I know my kids wouldn’t be dressed so cute!

Featured JBF Franchisee: Tyona Albrecht

Our Just Between Friends Franchisee of the week is Tyona Albrecht, owner of JBF, Spokane, Washington.

“My husband Matt and I have 4 kids, ages 12, 10, 4, and 2. I don’t know if there is a better job out there for me! My husband and kids are all part of this business and my 4 year old LOVES to go to ‘Mommy’s toy store.’ I joke that I am my own best customer! I LOVE shopping at JBF and look forward to it every spring and fall. I truly believe that if you love what you do it will show and success will soon follow,” says Tyona.

How did you get started with JBF?

I purchased the Spokane and North Idaho franchises in October of 2007 from a previous owner who introduced the JBF concept to our area. I had just quit running a daycare that I had for many years.  I had just had my 3rd child and wasn’t sure what God had planned for me next. I told my husband, Matt, that the franchise was for sale and he immediately said, “You should buy that. It would be perfect for you.” I had NO computer skills, but knew I loved JBF, bargain shopping and being involved with my community. Plus, I was willing to learn!

There was nothing like this in the Inland Northwest and the community immediately embraced the concept! When I purchased it, I immediately expanded the already great venue and added more racks. I let everyone know how much I loved JBF and would continue to grow. The Spokane sale grew so quickly that I decided to sell the N Idaho sale to focus my time and energy to make Spokane the biggest and best sale in the entire Northwest!

There is nothing like JBF in our area. Shoppers show up and are in awe! They have so many questions and are instantly amazed at the concept, organization and quality of JBF. JBF is such a blessing for so many people, whether it is the charity who receives the donations, consignors, shoppers, my staff and ultimately to my own family. I hear so many stories each sale about how families don’t know what they would do without JBF to help make ends meet. I am so proud and humbled for all the wonderful things JBF has done in Spokane.

With social media outlets, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn so relevant in how we communicate, what effect do these media outlets have on your business?

Facebook has been the BEST tool to help spread the word about the sale. Our biggest advertisers are our shoppers, consignors, and volunteers who already know and love JBF so Facebook is the perfect fit. I love that I can ‘talk’ to my customers instantly, answer questions and they can see photos of the sale so they get a visual of what a sale looks like. Facebook has saved me time as well since many of the email questions I get are now answered on there for everyone to see.

JBF is a family business and we rewarded ourselves for our hard work with a trip to Disneyland!

When did you personally feel you were successful with JBF?

I knew JBF Spokane was a success a couple years ago when the sale had grown so big so fast that I had to hire 25 staff people to help run the sale. I know that without the great team that I have put together, the sale would not be what it is today. It is wonderful having the same core group of people, who love JBF as much as I do, return for each event and know exactly what to do. Lead volunteers helped with consistency and gave me the opportunity to delegate. The sale is so big now that they are my eyes and ears and let me know what can be improved and what is working great.

I make a 3 level goal for myself for sales for each event – 1-expected, 2-great, 3- out of this world . At my spring 2011 event, I reached my highest goal! I couldn’t help but cry in disbelief. I set an even higher goal for the fall 2011, now that I know I can achieve it!

Featured JBF Franchisee: Marcy Leffingwell

Our Just Between Friends Franchisee of the week is Marcy Leffingwell. Marcy owns JBF, Springfield, Missouri. She’s been married to her best friend, Chris for 17 years and is the mom of 3 boys who keep them very busy!

With Social Media playing an important part in how we connect and communicate, in what way do you use Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn to promote your business?

I enjoy Facebook because it keeps me connected with consignors and volunteers year-round. I feel involved in their day-to-day lives. I have developed close friendships through JBF and Facebook is a way we can connect when it is not sale season.

How do you balance family and friends with being a successful business owner?

I have found that it is very important to set times and time-limits for accomplishing JBF tasks. I keep my family a priority by giving myself a timeline to keep up with my business.

Where do you hold your JBF events?

JBF Springfield is held at Remington’s. It is an 18,000 square foot family-friendly event center.

When did you consider yourself a success as a JBF Franchisee?

I knew JBF Springfield was going to be a success when we outgrew our 5,000 square foot gym in 2 sales. The community loves having an opportunity to participate in JBF as shoppers, consignors and volunteers. It has become one of Springfield’s most anticipated events!

How did you get started with JBF?

My partner Stacey approached me about owning a JBF franchise. I quickly decided that was what God had planned for my life! This has been a much bigger adventure than I ever dreamed, but I love it!

How long have you owned your franchise?

We just completed our 9th sale.

What is your favorite part of the business?

I love the relationships I have developed through JBF. It is like a semi-annual reunion of JBF moms! I love being involved in a business that helps families.

How do you prepare for an event?

Every event has different decisions to make. In many ways, it gets easier. As we have grown, there have been difficult decisions to make. We start preparing about 13 weeks before the sale. We have a checklist that we slowly mark off!

What advice would you give someone considering a JBF Franchise?

The most difficult challenge is not being able to do my normal mom responsibilites during the event. I have a wonderful support system of family and friends that make this business venture possible for me. Without them, I would never be able to own a JBF franchise.

Featured JBF Franchisee: Holly Davis

Our Just Between Friends featured franchisee this week is Holly Davis. Holly is one of the Event Coordinators for Grapevine, Texas.

Holly was born and raised in Irving, Texas. After she graduated from high school, she moved to Searcy, Arkansas where she attended Harding University and absolutely loved her college experience.  She graduated with a degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Administration.  “I taught school for several years and knew it was something she did not want to do for the rest of my life!  I met my husband while I was in college and we now have 3 children who keep us on our toes!”

With Social Media playing an important part in how we connect and communicate, in what way do you use F/Book, Twitter, LinkedIn to promote your business?

Social media is an easy and great way to stay connected and communicate with our consignors, volunteers & shoppers. Many people check their social media outlets before they check their standard email. It is a fantastic way to get a message out fast! It is also a great way to let the general public know who we are especially with our “friends” helping us! I know that I notice what my friends like or their interest through their facebook pages, etc.

How do you balance family and friends with being a successful business owner?

For me, part of the balance is getting them involved. My oldest two kids are at the age where they “get it.” They understand what the sale is all about and have figured out the routine of what it is like. I love that my husband is very involved and my parents help with many parts of the before, after and during of the sale. It is something we share and have in common. I love that!

Where do you hold your JBF events?

Currently our event is at the Grapevine Convention Center.

When did you consider yourself a success as a JBF Franchisee?

I have considered every sale a success for different reasons. I love that so many people are blessed either by what they are able to buy or by how the check they received in the mail is just what they needed at that time. Also helping the overwhelmed mom clothe her children for the season all in one stop for way below the retail price; the family that was able to take their 3 kids to Disney World with her consignor check alone or the family that was able to pay their mortgage that month only because of their JBF consignor check. There are so many stories. To me, those stories are a huge piece of success!

How did you get started with JBF?

I remember talking long distance to my friend from college on the phone probably 8 years ago. We had both majored in Elementary Education and neither one of us wanted to have a teaching career. She told me about JBF because her friend was a JBF owner. She knew it was something I would love and she was right! I remember I could not find out enough information fast enough, I was ready to start right then!

How long have you owned your franchise?

I have been a JBF owner for 8 years.

What is your favorite part of the business?

I really like so many things about JBF that it is hard to pick one. I guess if I had to choose one it would be that it is something my husband and I are both involved in and believe in. I don’t get his job the way he gets mine! I have also met and become friends with so many amazing people…other franchise owners, consignors, volunteers, shoppers, the list is endless. I also have to say that I love shopping JBF for my kids and then putting the same item back in the sale the next year for the price I paid for it! Who wouldn’t love to clothe their kids for free! Anyone can do that!

How do you prepare for an event?

I think I am always preparing! It is always in my mind in some way, there is always more that can be done! To start, clear the calendar and line up childcare!

What advice would you give someone considering a JBF Franchise?

My advice would be to volunteer at as many sales as possible as much as you can! You will learn a lot and get a big taste of what it is really like. If you don’t really love it, it is probably not the business for you!

Featured JBF Franchisee: Kris Bishop

Our Just Between Friends Franchisee if the week is Kris Bishop! Kris owns three of the JBF franchises, Maple Grove, Eagan and Elk River in Minnesota with her sister.

“I am a wife and mother of three teenagers. My journey with JBF began because of a connection to a franchise in California. I have always been a bargain shopper and thought that this idea would be a great thing in Minnesota,” said Kris.

“I approached JBF to franchise in Minnesota and my journey began in 2006 with our Maple Grove territory. Six months later, we purchased Eagan and in 2009 added Elk River,” continues Kris. “All three of our territories are in suburban areas of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Three territories keep me plenty busy year round.”

“Social media is the means by which women stay connected in today’s world. I do recognize this and we have strategically spent money on these venues in promoting our events. We invested money into our Facebook page and have worked hard to increase our traffic on that site.” Kris continues, “Growing your sales involves so many areas, but one of the key areas needs to be social media.”

Featured JBF Franchisee: Kim Colburn

Our Just Between Friends franchisee of the week is Kim Colburn. Kim owns two sales in Visalia and Fresno, California. She and her husband Gary have 4 children ages 8, 7, 6 and 2. “I love helping my community through JBF!” Kim said.

What happens at a JBF event?

JBF is the one-stop shop where you can get rid of items that your children have outgrown and recoup some of the money that you spent on purchasing those items.

For a shopper, it is the one-stop shopping place where you are able to come and save between 50-90% off what you would normally spend for the same items at a retail store. What is also great about JBF, you don’t have a go from store to store, garage sales, or mess with Craigslist (having strangers come to your house). Plus, you don’t have to deal with online auctions and trekking to the post office to ship items. With JBF, all the advertising and work is done for you. You bring your tagged items, drop them off to be inspected and after the sale is over you get a check in the mail for 65/70% on all the items that you sold! What is not to like about that?

What makes for a successful JBF event?

For me it is having an event that is well organized. Consignors want to consign their items at a place where shoppers feel they can find the items they need for their children at a price that doesn’t break the bank for their family. Having great communication with your consignors and shoppers is important so they know what to expect when they come to your event.

With social media outlets, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn so relevant in how we communicate, what effect do these media outlets have on your business?

Facebook has been a great tool! It has been a way to have contact with people throughout the year so you are always getting your name out there, not just twice a year. For me, I share information that not always pertains to the sale like freebies, recalls and tips for moms. I can say that it does work! I saw another person post about free ice cream and a person posted that “Kim keeps us up on all that info!” So I feel that people are not only coming to the Facebook page for everything JBF, but also for other info.

When did you personally feel you were successful with JBF?

I would have to say the fall of 2009 when I got the invite to the Top Achievers Reception at conference for my Visalia sale. Until that point, I didn’t have any idea where I stood in the realm of other JBF sales. To be honest, I thought I was at the bottom of the pack. I even called Shannon and asked what the criteria was for being a top achiever. I joked and said, “Having a sale?” I am proud of my sales and work very hard to have the best sale that it can be.

Top Five Tips For Successful Children’s Consignment

by Michelle Wiginton

As soon as your kids have outgrown or are no longer using items, resell them. Like everything else, clothes, toys, equipment, etc. lose their value over time.

Learn how to get out stains. Magic Erasers are great for plastic toys. Goo-Gone is super for stains. Tide Stain Pens are handy for your purse or diaper bag.

Don’t procrastinate when it comes to tagging. Everyone is busy, but moms who tag throughout the year are the ones who receive consignor checks for hundreds if not thousands of dollars each season.

Look for great deals and share those with other local moms. A bargain is a bargain. If you find an excellent garage or clearance sale, purchase items for resale and you’ll earn some extra money for just being in the right place at the right time.

Talk about saving money with other moms. Moms are smart. Talk to your friends and neighbors about ways you’ve found to save/make money and learn what they are doing to help increase their family’s bottom line.

Saving the Earth One Closet at a Time

By Kami Snowbarger, Director of Product Communications, Just Between Friends Franchise System, Inc.

While I am admittedly not a very “green” gal, I am teaching my children not to liter. They are also learning how to conserve electricity and not waste food. My parents taught me these things as a child and I am passing the lessons on to my own children. But times have changed. I was taught that polite people do not liter. I am teaching my children that not only is it not polite to liter, but it is also not smart. Smart people think about how liter costs us and the earth.

Each year the average American throws away more than 68 pounds of clothing. The average American purchases only about 10 pounds of recycled clothing a year. According to the non-profit Institute for Local Self-Reliance, the typical U.S. city with 50,000 residents has to pay (with local tax dollars) for the handling and disposal of some 3,000 tons of textiles every year. Textiles make up about four percent of the weight and eight percent of the volume of all municipal solid waste in the U.S. In 2006, according to Earth 911, people who bought used clothing by shopping at second-hand or consignment stores helped to save 2.5 billion pounds of clothes.

At our house we are trying to do our part to help. No, I don’t make my own compost and I don’t drive an electric car. I do, however, buy second-hand clothes. Twice a year I sell, “consign”, my children’s outgrown clothes and buy new, gently used clothes at the Just Between Friends sale in Tulsa. Children outgrow clothing so fast and you never know when they are going to eat a popsicle in their new outfit. I don’t worry about that. I know that when I buy clothing at JBF I am not only getting great, name brand clothing, but I am also saving money and helping the earth. I don’t want to contribute to the 3,000 tons of waste in my city. Consigning at JBF helps me and others across the country recycle our children’s clothes, toys and more. That helps the earth and saves everyone money. Which is not only smart, but makes me a little bit of a “green” gal.

Just Between Friends Franchise Systems featured on Good Morning America

Tulsa-based company Just Between Friends Franchise System received national attention this week on Good Morning America.  The ABC morning show produced a feature on the nation’s leading children’s and maternity consignment sales event.  The segment ran on Friday, March 25 on ABC.

GMA Correspondent Tory Johnson lead the crew to tape the segment at the franchise’s Dallas event on Wednesday, March 23rd.  The segment highlighted the savings that families can find at Just Between Friends events.  Good Morning America chose three moms to shop the event – each with different goals: one was buying baby gear for her newborn, another was a stay-at-home mom stocking up on spring and summer items for the kids and the other was a single working mom who is budget conscious. The mom who saved the most money will be the “GMA Winner”
